Just a little while longer....(part 8)

Thursday

Gladys could hardly wait for the bus to arrive. She wondered if she would see Josh or Tyler, or

both! Her heartbeat quickened as she hopped onto the bus and immediately scanned the seats for

Josh or Tyler. Strangely they were absent. She tried to hide her disappointment when she sat next to

someone else, but she was also a little worried. Were they okay? Maybe they took a different bus.

Gladys took a deep breath and tried to quiet her anxious thoughts. They were okay. They had to be.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Josh grabbed his backpack and ran over to Tyler's house. He hadn't answered any of Josh's texts.

Josh had thought nothing of it until he went to their scheduled meeting spot and he wasn't there.

Tyler was never late to anything. Josh climbed the ladder as quickly as possible, cursing when he

heard the bus drive down the adjacent street. They had missed it. Good thing Tyler's ladder was

hidden by trees. Josh knocked on the window and knocked impatiently. Tyler opened it and backed

out of the way. Josh fell through the opening and got up angrily.

"Where were you Tyler?"

Tyler looked at Josh sadly. "I couldn't-" his voice broke as he started to cry.

Josh put a hand on Tyler's shoulder supportively. "Ty? Are you okay?"

Tyler shook his head and collapsed in Josh's arms.

Josh caught him and led him to the bed. "Tyler, what's wrong?"

Tyler sniffled, "They...they were fighting again...." he said, eyes welling up with tears.

Josh's lips pressed into a thin line. His parents had never been happy together, and now poor Tyler

had to suffer.

"Tyler, this has happened before, it's gonna be okay, bud."

Tyler let his head drop to his chest. "No. They aren't."

     "What happened, Tyler?"

"Dad, h-hit her. He hit her Josh!" Tyler was sobbing now.

Josh's heart hardened in anger. Tyler's dad was not a good man.

      "Ty-"

"Mom is in the hospital with a fractured collarbone, I don't know what's gonna happen, Josh."

Josh looked at him sympathetically.

"I'm here for you. Your family may be distant, but I am right here. And I'm not leaving. I promise."

Tyler nodded before he laid down on his bed and cried. Josh didn't know what to do. He gently

covered Tyler with a blanket. He sat next to him on the bed and watched him fall asleep.

Josh couldn't believe what had happened. What was going to happen? Tyler's dad was abusive,

what if he hurt Tyler? Josh would die if anything like that ever happened.

He wouldn't allow it.
