Just a little while longer.....(part 5)
It was Saturday night, Gladys had actually acted upon her text and went to the party. Josh and
Tyler were there when she walked in and she even got to say hi before they were whisked away by,
Julia, who was hosting the party. Julia seemed to be in love with Josh more than anything and
couldn't stop sneaking little glances at him.
Gladys couldn't help but get a little jealous, but before she could do anything about it, a tall girl
with dyed hair walked up to her.
Gladys could recognize that small nervous smile anywhere.
Gladys could not breathe.
She could not think.
Her head felt fuzzy and her hands went numb.
In front of her stood her older sister, Beverly.
The sister that had left ten years ago.
The one who had lied when she said "just a little while".
The sister who had caused Gladys to have insomnia till she realized her sister was never coming
back. That sister stood before her, so of course, she passed out.
When she woke up, Gladys was at home on the couch with Beverly's worried face above her own.
Her parents were nowhere to be seen. Gladys jerked her head away from Beverly's and groaned.
Beverly pursed her lips and gently placed an ice pack underneath Gladys' head.
Gladys could feel the tears begging to be let free. She could feel her throat tighten and her eyes
swell. Don't cry. Don't cry.
She cried. She cried harder than she had ever cried. She sobbed and choked while Beverly held her
in her arms.
Beverly whispered over and over again how sorry she was. Gladys could hardly breathe.
Her sister had come back. After ten years, she came back. There was a moment of joy.
But then it was gone. Replaced by anger and betrayal. Why hadn't she come back sooner?
Gladys stiffened and pushed Beverly away. "Get away from me," she growled.
Beverly looked at her, shocked. "What? It's...It's me your sister."
Gladys scowled. "YOU LEFT ME. YOU NEVER CAME BACK."
Beverly stuttered. "I-I-wanted to. I-I'm sorry-Gladdy please--"
"DON'T SAY ANOTHER WORD. DON'T 'GLADDY' ME. TEN YEARS! TEN!" Gladys was
screaming now, tears streaming down her face.
Beverly looked down guiltily. "Look, what I did was wrong, b-but I'm back now. Aren't you h-
happy?"
Gladys wanted to say yes. She wanted to hug her sister and say all was forgiven, but she couldn't
forget. She couldn't forgive. There was an anger inside her that she couldn't contain.
"GET OUT."
Beverly looked at her, pain clearly written across her face.
"I SAID GET OUT. AND NEVER COME BACK. EVER. I HATE YOU," even as the words left her
mouth, Gladys regretted them. But she didn't stop Beverly as she walked outside dejectedly. She also
didn't chase her down and apologize. No, she stood there and let her emotions blot out everything
except for pain. All she could feel was the pain.
Would she ever be okay? She didn't know.
