Drowning in the Cold.

The water crept up to her ankles as she frantically looked for the life jackets. The water numbed her feet and made it hard to focus.
She finally found a few life jackets shoved to the very back of the closet. She shook her head in disbelief, who would keep Life Jackets in the back of a closet? She hurriedly scooped them into her arms and rushed out the door, towards the flow of water.

They would have to get out from the breach at the front of the ship. She sloshed through the water and started to shiver violently as it rose up to her waist.

Brayleigh pushed through the water every step a struggle, and finally, she got to where Lukas was. She suddenly lost her footing and water threatened to pull her under, she managed to shout, "Lukas! Help me!"

In a moment, Lukas had swum over, his whole body soaked, lips blue. "Bray?!" He choked on the gushing water. "We have to go n-"
Brayleigh pushed off the floor of the ship and her head broke the surface. "Lukas, he-" Another wave of water slammed into her face.

Lukas' strong arms pulled her towards the current of water and choked out, "We....have...to swim..."

Brayleigh knew she had missed something, but when he pointed towards the ever-widening hole, she understood.
Lukas grabbed the axe from below the surface and hacked at the opening again and again until it was big enough for them to get to. Soon the ceiling was so close their heads brushed against it. They sucked in a few breaths and pushed the life jackets through the opening.
Then, Brayleigh and Lukas swam through, narrowly escaping the sinking ship.

Brayleigh and Lukas reached the surface and gasped for air. By the light of the moon, they managed to find one of the life jackets, which Lukas told Brayleigh to wear. After a few minutes, the other life jacket floated by, Lukas quickly grasped it with his frozen fingers and slipped it on. Now they wouldn't die from drowning. But the cold water seeped into their bones, making their top fear: hypothermia.

If they could make it to the morning, they might be able to swim to an island or spot another ship. Brayleigh and Lukas clung to each other, and as the moon sank down towards the horizon, a large peaked object loomed closer. Land.
